Truth and Reconciliation Week

Today marks the beginning of Truth and Reconciliation Week across Canada in honour of the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home.Ìý

Students in the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ DistrictÌýwill spend the week learning more about this history, through books, virtual events, and discussions.

Here is a list of resources and events being shared in the district to help people on their learning journey.Ìý

Live Events:

  • September 30: Memorial Peace Park, Maple Ridge (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • Come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. The event will include shirt painting, drummers, bannock, community art pieces, activity tents, and an Elders’ hospitality ten.Ìý
  • October 1: McMillan Island Park, Fort Langley (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
    • Kwantlen First Nation presents the first annual Salmon and Cranberry Harvest Celebration. The event will include vendors, cranberry bannock, cranberry frybread, and Salish drummers. Entrance is by donation and the celebrations will take place outdoors rain or shine.Ìý

Virtual Events:

  • September 30:Ìý
    • Designed for students in Grades 5 through 12, this virtual event provides an opportunity to learn first hand from Residential ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists and leaders from nations and cultures across the country. Educators can select the events they wish to livestream for their students and download free educational resources.
