As a signatory to the British Columbia Climate Action Charter, Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ District No. 42 is committed to measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, creating plans, and taking actions to meet the province’s GHG emission reduction targets.
In 2014, the district began work around reducing its carbon footprint through a strategic approach to facilities management and planning.
SD42 developed Policy 6530: Environmental Sustainability to acknowledge the importance and shared responsibility of trustees, administrators, teachers, students, and support personnel in promoting sustainability. One of the key principles of this policy is to monitor the implementation of an environmental sustainability plan.Â
The current Environmental Sustainability Plan (2022-2026) aims to reduce GHG emissions by 22% compared to 2007 levels by the end of 2026.
To prepare the district for 2027 and beyond, the current plan will be transformed into a Low Carbon Strategic Action Plan (LCSAP). This plan will focus on energy management, sustainability, and climate change. It will also establish pillars and action items aimed at meeting the GHG emission reduction targets set by the provincial government.
In partnership with BC Hydro and FortisBC, the district will continue undertaking studies and site reviews to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs.
